How to care for your denim

Good denim gets better with age. The secret is washing it less, washing it cold, and letting it dry naturally so it keeps both its fit and its depth of colour.

Wash it less than you think

Air your denim between wears rather than washing every time. Less washing means the fit and colour last far longer.

Turn inside out, wash cold

Wash inside out in cold water with similar colours to protect the surface and minimise fading.

Expect the indigo to settle

Darker washes release a little indigo in the first few washes — this is normal and settles over time.

Line dry in the shade

Skip the dryer. Air drying in the shade keeps the fit true and prevents shrinkage.

Do

  • Wash inside out
  • Use cold water
  • Wash with similar colours
  • Spot clean small marks

Don't

  • Wash after every wear
  • Use hot water
  • Tumble dry on high
  • Bleach

A note on colour transfer

Raw and darker denims can transfer a little indigo onto light bags or upholstery until the dye settles. Wash separately for the first few wears.

How often should I wash denim?

Less than you'd think. Airing between wears preserves the fit and colour much better than frequent washing.

Will the colour run?

Darker washes can release some indigo early on. Always wash separately and cold for the first few washes.

Can I tumble dry denim?

Avoid it — heat shrinks and warps the fit. Line dry in the shade instead.
